The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team lost to New Braunfels Long Creek 2-0 Jan. 30 in District 26-4A play.
The Lady Dragons scored both of their goals in the final four minutes of the contest.
Lady Mustangs (8-2-2, 0-2) head coach Marisa Miller summed up the match.
“We didn’t play like we were supposed to,” she said. “We’ve been seeing the whole time that you have to play we did against Wimberley (a 1-0 setback Jan. 28) in every single game. None of these teams are going to be easy, and we knew that. This showed them that there’s no game that we have off.”
Wimberley beat San Antonio Davenport 2-1 and Fredericksburg crushed Bandera 6-1 also on Jan. 30. Fischer Canyon Lake had the night off. On Feb. 3, Davenport shut out Long Creek 4-0, Canyon Lake crushed Bandera 8-0, and Wimberley stomped Fredericksburg 11-1. Marble Falls had the night off.
To illustrate the depth of talent in the district, consider this.
Wimberley and Canyon Lake are ranked No. 1 in different polls, while Davenport is ranked in the top 15, and Marble Falls was ranked in the top 10 going into the Jan. 27 matches.
To those teams that aren’t state ranked in the district, they will bring their best against the ones that are. That’s why Miller said there aren’t any easy matches the rest of the way.
“In this district we have to show up every single game,” she said. “We have to play like we did against Wimberley every single game. I think (my players) realize that. We have to be mentally and physically ready to play every single time we go into a game.”
Though this is the first time this season the Lady Mustangs have lost back-to-back matches and the outcome wasn’t what they wanted, the coach pointed out there’s still plenty of soccer left to play.
Marble Falls had a bye Tuesday, Feb. 3, and welcomes Davenport Friday, Feb. 6, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
“Everyone was clearly upset,” she said. “We have to rebuild, we have back out there and we have to get stronger. Anything can happen. Does it make it harder for us? Yeah, absolutely. But it’s not over and we still need to take care of business.”
